Day 7 - Sharing Loaves & Fishes

Here in Guatemala, we see a lot of strange sites. One of the first puzzling images of the day, was Dwight cutting a pound bag of Twizzlers licorice into bite size pieces at the breakfast table. He wanted to make sure he had enough pieces to share with the kids at Los Limones. In addition, he had a bag of goldfish crackers that he wanted to hand out to the children, who are so hungry for food, attention and love.

I didn't put it all together until much later, but when I opened the "La Biblia para Niños" book to read to the kids, the story "Los Panes y Los Peces" was what I started with. Sandra, the niece of Beto, heard me slaughtering the Spanish pronunciation and rescued the children by reading the story for all of us. After reading about how Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes, the children got a snack of licorice and fishes. It was great to see how the Guatemalans and the Americans worked together in construction projects, in teaching kids about the miracles of Jesus and to hear how the medical team again saw 115 patients. It is amazing what God can do with us when we all work together.

We have just one more day to finish our work projects. Friday we will dedicate the homes. The medical team will rejoin the rest of us tomorrow in the afternoon. We look forward to their return to hear more about the work that they have done.

Thanks so much for your comments! We all sat together before dinner and read them together. They really lifted our spirits after a back-breaking day of digging septic systems. :/

  1. Guys,

Thanks so much to all of you for your efforts this week. I think this is what the Bible calls long-suffering! Thanks for being the hands and feet of Christ. May God give each of you continued strength so that your light will continue to shine brightly.

    Matt 5: 14-16
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

May these families (and all these children) see the light of Christ in each of you. These wonderful homes that you have worked so hard to build might not have electricity but they can still have light (the kind that never goes out).

Thanks again for serving. I will pray for a safe return for all.

  3. What awesome opportunities you have had to serve! I love the licorice and goldfish story. We prayed for your ministry and mission this morning in catechism class and talked a bit about what you are doing.
May God continue to bless you with opportunities, challenges and successes during your last couple of days in Guatemala.
    See you soon!

  4. What an awesome witness you all are to the lives that you touch every day there and also to us here as we watch God work through you. You are all in my prayers as you continue to let God lead you every day and give you strength to do what you are doing.

You all are examples to me and to our congregation in what we should be doing each and every day in our own community here in Milwaukee and also what we should be doing around the world.

God’s blessings to you on the rest of your trip and please know that you have all touch my heart with your courage and strength.

    In Christ’s Love!

  5. Digging septic tanks! I think that is my spiritual gift as I dug "old and tired" septic tanks to work my way through college. It gave me a deeper appreciation of sewers!

Thanks for your work among God's people.

    Blessings-

  8. Love the photo of Dwight with the children! How wonderful for the Holy Spirit to help in the planning & preparation of today's lesson with the Twizzlers & Gold Fish. GOD IS SO GOOD, and THANK YOU for your daily hard work and the sharing of God's word to the HARVEST that is so ripe and ready to hear the WORD! I so look forward to one day experiencing the same!

Continually praying for each of you . . . In Christ's love, Moni

  9. It is great to see all the pictures and the people you are helping. Although, when my 5 year old daughter (Liana) saw the picture of the family that you were going to build a house for she said "What does Aunt Janet know about building houses!". I told her that she probably would be doing the painting. You continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Karen McGhee.
